Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Liquid Calendar, from what it does to how to get started.
What is Liquid Calendar?
What is Liquid Calendar and who is it for?
Liquid Calendar is a local desktop calendar and task planner designed specifically for **Fedora Linux / KDE Plasma 6**. It provides an English interface for managing your schedule and tasks without requiring any cloud account. It's perfect for individuals who value privacy, need a robust offline calendar, and work within the KDE Plasma environment.
What does "local" mean in this context?
"Local" means your data is stored directly on your computer. There is no cloud synchronization, account sign-in, or analytics. Your events and tasks remain private on your machine, giving you complete control over your information. This makes Liquid Calendar a great choice for users who prioritize data privacy and offline functionality.
What are the current beta features?
Liquid Calendar Beta includes a comprehensive set of features for managing your time and tasks:
- Multiple Views: Today overview, 24-hour weekly timeline, month view, and 7/14/30-day agenda.
- Task Management: Undated tasks with optional scheduling, priorities, categories, and editable checklists.
- Repeating Events: Flexible repeats with specific weekdays, individual occurrence management, and reminders.
- Smart Search: Search across years using titles, projects, checklist steps, locations, notes, and dates.
- Quick Add: Natural language parsing for rapid event creation (e.g., "tomorrow 15:00 Dentist for 45m").
- Event Templates: Save and reuse frequent event types.
- Optional Widget: A desktop widget for at-a-glance viewing on your KDE Plasma desktop.
Getting Started
What are the system requirements?
Liquid Calendar is designed for:
- Operating System: **Fedora Linux / KDE Plasma 6**
- Python: **Version 3.10 to 3.14**
- Dependencies: `venv/pip` support, system Qt platform libraries, and `notify-send` for notifications.
- Other systems are not currently validated.
How do I install Liquid Calendar?
Installation is straightforward. Download the latest archive, extract it, and run the installer from your terminal:
- Download the archive from the official release page.
- Extract the contents to a folder of your choice.
- Open a terminal in that folder.
- Run the command:
python3 installieren.py
To also install the optional Plasma widget, use: python3 installieren.py --with-widget
No administrator (sudo) privileges are required. The installer creates a per-user virtual environment, ensuring it doesn't interfere with your system's Python setup.
How do I update to a new version?
To update to a new version, download the new archive, extract it to the same folder as the old version, and run the installer again. The installer will automatically back up your existing program files. After the update, you must quit the old application using Ctrl+Q and then reopen the new one.
If you have the Plasma widget installed, you may need to add the new widget ("Liquid Glass Calendar (Beta)") through Plasma's widget picker. If an old widget is active, the system will prompt you to use the "Connect" feature, which briefly reloads your desktop and panels.
Usage & Features
How do I create events and tasks?
Creating events and tasks is simple. Click the + Event or + Task button. Events are dated by default, while tasks are undated. For tasks, you can choose to Schedule in calendar or use Find time to assign a specific date and time. You can set priorities, add projects, create checklists, and configure categories, reminders, and repeat patterns.
Tasks are independent of events. Completing all checklist steps in a task does not automatically mark the task itself as complete. You can drag and drop events to reschedule them.
How does repeating events and tasks work?
For weekly repeats, you can select one or more specific days (e.g., Mon/Wed/Fri). The app will only create events on those selected weekdays. When you drag a repeating event, you only move that single occurrence. To edit the entire series, use the Series option in the editor.
When you complete a repeating task, only the selected occurrence is marked complete. Future repetitions remain unaffected. You can reopen a completed occurrence without creating a duplicate.
What is "Quick Add" and how does it work?
Quick Add (shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+N) lets you create events using natural language. It can parse commands like:
"tomorrow 15:00 Dentist for 45m""Morgen 15 Uhr Zahnarzt für 45 Minuten"(German support)
The app recognizes English/German full weekday names, relative terms (today, tomorrow), ISO dates, various date formats (e.g., 15.03.2027), 12/24-hour times, and duration keywords. It then creates a preview draft that you must review and save. The parser is designed to be helpful but always review the draft before saving.
How do projects work in task management?
A project is simply a name you assign to a task. When you assign a project name to a task, it appears in the Projects list. You can see a count of completed and total tasks for each project. You can edit a project to rename it, merge it with another project, or clear its assignments from tasks without deleting the tasks themselves. Project names are case-sensitive, limited to 80 characters, and cannot contain the asterisk (*) symbol.
How do reminders work?
Reminders require the Liquid Calendar application to be open or running in the system tray. If you close the main window, the application may continue running in the background to show notifications. To completely quit the application and disable reminders, use the Ctrl+Q shortcut. By default, the application does not start automatically when you log in.
Data & Security
Where is my data stored?
Your data is stored locally on your computer in two main locations:
- Application Data: Program files are installed in
~/.local/share/liquid-glass-planner/. - Database: Your calendar and task data is stored in an SQLite database shared with the companion widget at
~/.local/share/plasmashell/QML/OfflineStorage/Databases/dd9450f249be1bf7e7f3854d39b8b74b.sqlite.
Daily backups of your database are automatically kept in the backups/ directory within the application data folder, retaining the latest 14 daily files.
Can I back up and import my data?
Yes, Liquid Calendar provides robust backup and import options:
- JSON Backup: Exports events, tasks, and their metadata. This format does not include the separate template library.
- Automatic Backups: The application creates daily SQLite backups automatically, which do include templates.
- ICS Export: Allows you to export standard calendar events to an ICS file for use in other calendar applications.
- Import: The import function adds new entries with unique IDs without overwriting or replacing your existing data.
Important: It is always recommended to manually back up your important data before using any beta software.
Is my data secure and private?
Yes, your data is completely secure and private. Liquid Calendar has no cloud synchronization, requires no account sign-up, and does not implement any analytics or telemetry. All your information stays local on your machine. The application does not connect to any external servers, ensuring your personal calendar and task data never leaves your computer.

These documents are included in the download and are accessible through the application's interface or the project page.
What should I do if I find a bug?
